International Human Rights Day
Seems appropriate on International Human Rights Day to be writing notes to donors who support the work of Women for Afghan Women (WAW). This organization fights for women and children's human rights every day both here in the U.S. and in Afghanistan. With our recent election results, it is crucial that we all do everything we can to protect and support each individual's human rights. WAW turns 15!
What an amazing night! Women for Afghan Women just celebrated 15 years of life saving work on behalf of Afghan women and children. It was a beautiful evening and Theatre for Humans couldn't be more proud to have volunteered to help make their Gala event a true success. Sonita Alizadeh, a young Afghan rap artist, received WAW's Advocate Award for her activism in stopping child marriage and Rod Nordland (NY Times Kabul bureau chief) gave the keynote speech about his experien

WAW is in a new book!
An organization that is near and dear to my heart, Women for Afghan Women (WAW), will be included in a new book entitled " We Are Afghan Women". Theatre for Humans introduced WAW to the George W. Bush Institute last year and I am proud to say that since then, the Bush Institute has been extremely helpful and supportive of Women for Afghan Women and the work they do. This new book spotlights the stories of 29 inspiring and heroic Afghan women in there own voices and records

Women for Afghan Women Walk
Walking over the Brooklyn Bridge has long been a goal of mine but for some reason, I’ve never done it. My excuses have included “it’s too far away from my hotel” or “it’s would require me getting up too early” or “it will take too much time”. Finally Women for Afghan Women gave me a reason that I couldn’t resist – help raise money for our organization. So on a beautiful, crisp October morning, I finally walked over the Bridge with a group of people all there to help wome

Women for Afghan Women Gala
Congratulations to Women for Afghan Women (WAW) as they celebrate 14 years of service to Afghan women, families and children in the United States and Afghanistan. Unfortunately work in Los Angeles prevented us from attending the Gala in person, but we were definitely there in spirit. Theatre for Humans was proud to help with Gala preparations and to have written, directed and produced the WAW video “Afghanistan Moving Forward” which highlighted the progress that WAW and th

Afghanistan 2015
OK, so I had such a great time on my second trip to Afghanistan that is will be hard to describe, but I will try. On this trip we not only spent time in Kabul but also had the opportunity to travel to Mazar-i-Sharif. Mazar-i-Sharif is a short but somewhat treacherous flight on Kam Air (an Afghanistan airline) over the snowy mountains of Afghanistan. Wendy joined me on this adventure and we both got to travel with amazing women including Suni (WAW founder and our fearless

Going back to Afghanistan!
Can’t believe I’m getting the chance to go back to Afghanistan this year. It was totally unexpected but Women for Afghan Women (WAW) has asked us to help create a short video showing their work and the progress women have made in the last 10 years. I talk about WAW all the time but for those who don’t know, Women for Afghan Women is an amazing organization that provides life saving services to women, families and children in Afghanistan and the United States. In fact they are

Afghanistan - WAW Women's Shelter
It has taken a while to write this because I couldn’t quite find the words to talk about the remarkable women I met at both centers. Before leaving for this trip I had heard how horrific it can be for women in Afghanistan and thought I was properly prepared for what I was going to experience and the women I would meet. What I have learned is that no matter what you read or see on the news, nothing prepares you for meeting survivors firsthand. I am constantly amazed at thei

Afghanistan - Children's Support Center
We hit the ground running once we arrived in Kabul. Everyday was filled with eye opening experiences at the various Women for Afghan Women (WAW) programs followed by dinners with human rights activists, documentarians, political appointees and even the Ambassador from India! Suni, one of the founders of WAW, made sure we met everyone. Our first two days were spent at the Children’s Support Center (CSC) interviewing Farkhunda Saamy (WAW’s Country Director), Shahbibi Halima (

Afghanistan - are we really going???
OK, I must warn everyone that this will be a series of posts because there is just to much to say at one time about Afghanistan and Women for Afghan Women. I'll start with… I have wanted to go to Afghanistan ever since I saw a report from Diane Sawyer about the conditions women and girls were facing under Taliban rule following 9/11. I talked about wanting to go, but had no idea really how to do it. Afghanistan seemed so distant and different and I just couldn't get up the
